John Yeats serves as the Executive Director of the Missouri Baptist Convention. His responsibilities include leadership, oversight and strategic planning for the Missouri Baptist Convention. He assists the convention comprised of 1800+ cooperating churches with a mission of cooperating with Missouri Baptists to purposely make missional disciples, multiply churches and develop 21st century leaders. Part of his responsibilities include funding promotion and support that is vital to the cooperative work of the churches that affiliate with the Missouri Baptist Convention.
Since 1997, he has served as one of the five elected officers of the Southern Baptist Convention (Recording Secretary) and is a member of the SBC Executive Committee. His responsibilities include accurate recording of the proceedings and facilitating orderly, civil processes for business meetings of the convention, the largest democratic meeting of its kind in the world. In 2014, the executive committee members elected John to serve as vice chairman.
Prior to his leadership in Missouri, John served as Director of Communications and Public Policy for the Louisiana Baptist Convention. His responsibilities included Cooperative Program promotion and liaison to the Louisiana state legislature.
From 1997-2005, Dr. Yeats served as editor of the Oklahoma Baptist Messenger (85,000 subscribers.) In 1996-1997, he served the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana as the Director of Communications and editor of the Indiana Baptist. Prior to his ministry with state conventions, he served 20 years as pastor of churches in Texas and Kansas. He has led several multi-staff churches through effective interim pastorates.
Dr. Yeats received a B.A. from Dallas Baptist University and Masters of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was awarded a Doctor of Ministry degree from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a D.D. from the American Christian College and Seminary in Bethany, OK.
He is married to Sharon and they have three sons. Their eldest son John-Mark is Dean of the College at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City. Joel is a businessman in Indianapolis, Indiana and Jordan is an executive with a software service provider with offices in New York City, NY and Austin, TX. John and Sharon have nine grandchildren.
The focus of John Yeats’ life is on making others successful. His creativity, leadership, writing, commonsense coupled with his passion for the Lord Jesus permeate his life and ministry. His personal life experiences and studies have sharpened his skills for the purpose of helping people and organizations understand their value for God’s purposes.
People who spend anytime around John sense his contagious enthusiasm for a purposeful, prayerful, passionate life. He and Sharon have traveled in many areas of the world encouraging and training hundreds leaders in churches and church-related institutions to become more effective in their ministry environment.
Several non-profit entities have benefited from John’s consulting, administrative and editing skills. This includes his service with the Missouri Baptist Convention ($22+ million managed), the Louisiana Baptist Convention ($25+ million managed) and on the 84 member Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention (annual budget, $200+ million) and the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (annual budget, $4.5+ million). His convention leadership reveals how his reconciling demeanor, principled statesmanship and sensibilities help people make appropriate decisions for long-term effectiveness.
